Well, we made it through the first day of Kindergarten yesterday. Thank you for all of the well wishes on my last post.
Yesterday, my daughter was okay but a little nervous as she was lining up to go into the building. I was standing with her, and she said, "Mommy, I don't want you to go." I was able to reassure her, but a minute later, while we were still waiting, she said it again. I told her it was just like the Mommy In My Pocket book (the "Old Yeller" book-of-the-Mom-world), and as soon as I thought of that book, I started crying. It was time to go, and she went inside. Of course, she did fine...and I was super proud of her!
I've been working on a little back-to-school present for her. I used this week's Play Date Cafe colors as the color inspiration:
Since my daughter has very fine hair, and she always needs hair clips to keep her hair out of her face. The PDCC colors were perfect for some of her fall wardrobe. So, here's what I came up with:
I made three hair clips and put them all on a tag to give to her. The flowers, butterfly, and sentiment are from Technique Tuesday. The butterfly image is stamped...it's not patterned paper (LOVE!). The paper is from Echo Park--see the lined paper? Yep, I was thinking school! I topped it with some Twinery twine.
For the navy clip, I used a Spellbinders die to cut two flowers from PTI felt and added a PTI button. I made the little green korker ribbon to look like a leaf. Here's a close-up:
The pink striped clip was super easy. I just glued the American Crafts ribbon, made a bow tie, and topped with some bling. Here's a close-up:
The multi-stripe clip was definitely the most complicated, only because I had to get the felt to stick to itself. I used a different Spellbinders die to cut the flower, cut a section out of the flower, and adhered the sides together to give the flower depth. I saw this technique on Melissa Bickford's blog using her Flower Fusion dies. Here's a close-up:
I am in love with that multi-stripe ribbon. My LSS carries an unusual brand that escapes me at the moment, but lots of cute stripes. It was hard to not buy about 10 different colors--ha ha.
Thanks for looking! Have a happy Wednesday!

ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet first-time-in-school gift for your daughter! The hair clips are absolutely adorable, and so is the tag for giving them! (Teachers always prefer the parent crying over the child. :P)
ReplyDeleteOH! What a CLEVER CLEVER idea for these colors--LOVE those barrettes! LOVE that last one--so cute! Great job--you rocked this challenge;) Thanks so much for playing along with us and joining in the fun over at the PDCC:)
ReplyDeleteJocelyn these hair clips are precious! Your daughter is going to love them! Sounds like with a little coaxing your daughter made it through her first day of kindergarten. The question is how did Mom make it through the first day? ;)

ReplyDeleteOh shut the front door! This is a ding ding ding winner and has me drooling here!!!!! Woman how do you do all that other stuff "called life" i.e. work umm 108 page reports, and have time to crank these little cuties out! Your daughter is one lucky and special girl! You are ONE AWESOME MOM! Also makes me want a girl! :-)
ReplyDeleteJocelyn, those clips are amazing! How bright and fun and pretty! They will look fabulous in her pretty blonde hair!
ReplyDeleteDon't know of that book yet but given the reference I'm sure I would have started crying too. :)
This is SO cute! I love those clips!
ReplyDeleteMan, I need you to make me some of these clips! They are so cute! I bet she was so excited to get a present after her first day at school. Glad to hear she made it through better than her mom did! ;)
ReplyDeleteOooh...these are so fabulous! I would wear them! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, my. These are so cute ! and what a cute way to present them.
ReplyDeleteLittle bit jealous for a couple reasons. 1) you have a girl to make hair clips for! 2)she didn't want you to leave!
ReplyDeleteI have 3 boys. They won't let me put in hair clips. And I've tried. hee hee. Middle son just started kindergarten. It was the most uneventful first day ever. No one cried (not even me), no one needed me. Sigh.
The clips are sooo cute btw.
What an awesome present for your little girl! These are so sweet :)
